It is very easy, in the hustle and bustle of today's life, to become so
caught up in our own lives and concerns that we can overlook the needs of
the people around us. There are many people who live their lives day-by-day,
paycheck-by paycheck, medical chart-by-medical chart who could use just
a little help from those of us who are willing. Sure, it's an easy thing
to pass this great responsibility on to our local churches, civic groups,
even the government, expecting them to give aid and cheer to those less
fortunate, but sometimes it takes people that are willing to extend a charitable
hand to make a difference.
One group that is doing its best to help our community is the Shoals Car
and Truck Club. While its purpose is to provide wholesome entertainment
by way of car shows, drive-in events and club meetings, one of its main
goals as a non-profit organization is to provide funds for community aid
programs. Every year, the club donates much of its proceeds to the Florence
Telethon's Cerebral Palsy Fund, as well as giving aid to five families in
the Shoals area to help provide them with a good Christmas. The Club also
gives what it can to the community as a whole, supplying such items as a
large Barney statue in Tuscumbia's Spring Park, giving a five-hundred dollar
donation to the Ronald McDonald House and helping other members of the public
who are in need, whether by friendly contribution or something as simple
as a "Get Well" card. This Christmas, the Club was also able to
donate to the Salvation Army Angel Tree Fund.
The Shoals Car and Truck Club heads up six car shows per year, ranging from
small benefit shows like the Lexington Founders Day Show, to larger area
wide events such as the W.C. Handy and Helen Keller Festival shows. All
of the Club's events are open to the public and, again, the proceeds from
these events go directly back to the immediate community. So, the next time
you notice that the Shoals Car and Truck Club is holding a show, please
be sure to show them some support, because by supporting the Club, you also
support your community.
The Shoals Car and Truck Club meets at 7:00pm on the first Tuesday of every
month at the Tourway Pancake House on Florence Boulevard. They are always
looking for new members and invite anyone interested to attend.
